Also referred to as bruxism, teeth grinding is an unconscious reaction to stress that usually occurs during sleep. Teeth grinding affects about one third of the population and can result in tooth wear, headaches, and TMJ disorder. Dr. Resuta designs custom mouthguards that alleviate the symptoms of teeth grinding.
What causes teeth grinding?
Causes vary, but some factors include tension, stress, anxiety, misaligned teeth, poor posture, and diet. Teeth grinding can occur during the day or at night, and most often it affects women and individuals who react to stress with anger or frustration. Chewing pencils or biting fingernails, lips, or cheeks are commonly associated with teeth grinding.
What are the health effects of teeth grinding?
Teeth grinding is considered a medical and dental condition, because it damages the teeth and surrounding structures, like the head, neck, and jaw. If left untreated, teeth grinding can result in headaches, broken or missing teeth, TMJ disorder, depression, and insomnia.
What are my treatment options?
Dr. Resuta will determine if you grind your teeth by examining your mouth, jaw joints, and head. Most patients find relief simply by wearing a custom mouthguard or nightguard. To ensure your mouthguard or nightguard fits securely, Dr. Resuta will take precise measurements of your mouth and impressions of your teeth. This information will be sent to a dental lab where your mouthguard will be fabricated from first-rate dental materials. A mouthguard that fits improperly may cause more problems, so Dr. Resuta will make sure of your appliance's proper fit. Other therapies may include orthodontics, stress management, and focused facial relaxation.
