Porcelain Crowns, Inlays, & Onlays

We place porcelain crowns for a variety of reasons. A crown can protect a damaged tooth, provide support for a bridge, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. Sometimes, instead of using a crown, Dr. Resuta can restore a tooth with an inlay or onlay, which are partial crowns.

Crowns cover the entire tooth. Dr. Resuta can place a crown over an existing tooth or secure a porcelain crown to a dental implant. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials that include porcelain, porcelain fused to metal (PFM), and gold. Most people prefer porcelain crowns because they’re highly esthetic and durable. Dr. Resuta will examine your tooth structure to determine which material will restore your tooth’s function and stability best.

We use inlays and onlays when a filling just won’t do the job but a full crown isn’t necessary. An inlay fits between the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay fits over the cusps. Much like crowns, inlays and onlays are milled from porcelain with our CEREC machine. This means that Dr. Resuta can prepare your tooth for an inlay or onlay, mill the restoration in our Atlanta dental office, and place it the same day. Not every situation is right for an inlay or onlay. Dr. Resuta will carefully examine your case to determine whether a porcelain crown, inlay, or onlay is the best option.
